Keywords are an important part of branding and marketing your business. They are what help people searching for what you have to offer find you. In an effort to go after the big juicy keywords we know people are searching for, we use keywords in our advertising like “content marketing,” “small businesses” or “entrepreneurs,” and we look past long-tail keywords that may actually be much more valuable.

A search for “content marketers” returns 32 million results on Google. A long-tail keyword would be something like “content marketers for promoting an event.” This keyword returns one million results and is far less competitive.

I mentioned they may be more valuable, so why is that? If someone is searching long-tail keywords, they are almost always further along in the decision making process. Someone who is searching for a content marketer to promote an event is much closer to making a purchase than someone just looking for information on content marketers.

Action step: Your action step is to incorporate long-tail keywords that are important to your business in your blog posts and your Facebook and Google advertising. They will have less competition for them and can bring a very valuable return back to you.
